Cast iron railings, floral design

Ornamental Cast Iron Railings

This attractive floral design may be seen elsewhere in the West End, but the manufacturer is not known.
Dudley Drive originally had these railings on both sides of the street, and round into Clarence Drive. Of these, only three short sections remain today. Some were lost in the blitz, the rest taken later for the war effort.
The same design was also used in the very oldest Hyndland properties in Hyndland Road and at the top of Clarence Drive.

Stained glass window

Decorative Glass

The blast of the landmine shattered many windows, and owners have chosen to remove many more, such as the oval windows in front doors. Sadly, very little therefore remains.

The rear stair window (left), has an upper leaded panel based on a scroll, the lower one on a coat of arms.

Wall Tiles

The tiles in our 'wally closes' (ie entrances with tiles on the lower half of the walls) are on the ground floor level. A 'thistle' stamp was sometimes used to decorate the plasterwork on the upper flights of the stairs.

CONSERVATION

It is important for owners to be aware of and help conserve this valuable artistic heritage. Consult the "Maintenance and Design Guidelines", obtainable free from Glasgow West Conservation Trust.
