Hyndland
Hyndland is a residential area in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland. The red sandstone 4-storey tenements were built between 1898 and 1910, towards the end of the main tenement-building phase in Glasgow. Hyndland was a luxury development of its day, and has remained a desirable area. There are many shops, Hyndland Secondary School, Hyndland Church and Hyndland Bowling Club.
The principal thoroughfares today are Hyndland Road and Clarence Drive. Queensborough Gardens, Falkland Street, Lauderdale Gardens, Polwarth Street, Airlie Street, Novar Drive, Dudley Drive and part of Turnberry Road make up the rest of Hyndland.
What does DACT stand for ?
Dudley Drive, Airlie Street, Clarence Drive and Turnberry Road ie the streets on the four sides of the block. We have included the neighbouring Drive Supermarket in Clarence Drive, Hyndland Secondary School, and Hayburn Park.
The Project
Some of the local residents have been working together since January 1996 to produce for a magazine-style local history. It covers the construction of the properties around 1900, the landmine in Dudley Drive during the Clydebank Blitz of 1941, reminiscences of long-standing and former residents, and features of the present day.
The Exhibition
These web pages present a snapshot of the exhibition which has been on display in the local library and the Mitchell Library.
